I adore Kimpton Hotels. They are pet-friendly, unique, offer a complimentary wine reception, and nearly always feature at least one fabulous local eatery. The Cottonwood Hotel in Omaha is no exception, paying homage to Omaha and its love for steak with The Committee Chophouse.
Located in the chic Blackstone District, dining at The Committee Chophouse evokes a powerful nostalgia, hearkening to holidays when city downtowns bustled with lights, meticulously decorated windows, and friendly shoppers.
Typically open only for dinner, the cozy and classic chophouse is open for lunch this holiday season (Tuesday – Friday through December 24). The menu features something for everyone: truffle frites, bacon, calamari, classic chilled oysters with seasonal mignonette, and shrimp cocktail mingle with salads, decadent soups, and a lovely array of elevated sandwich favorites.
Daytime diners can choose to up the ante by indulging in a classic steak cut, mouthwatering sides, or by finishing the meal with a decadent dessert. Portions are generous and beautifully plated, making it tempting to order several shared options for a table of friends, family, or business associates.
My dining partner and I enjoyed a delightful daytime repast, treating ourselves to delectable dishes such as the velvety Loaded Potato Velouté studded with thick crispy bacon and house made chips, made even more decadent with a generous helping of gruyere and a drizzle of crème fraiche. The rich soup is served in a gorgeous French saucepan, adding to the timeless elegance.
The luscious beef tartare, topped with a cured egg yolk and micro greens arrived on stunning blue plates bejeweled with dainty pickled vegetables and generous bias-cut slices of perfectly toasted house made baguette (toasty enough to stand up to the tartare, but soft enough to spare the roof of your mouth).
It didn’t seem right to leave without sampling the storied Reuben sandwich, developed in this very spot when it bore the Blackstone Hotel moniker. According to legend (though specifics are murky at best), several men gathered to play poker, grew hungry, and thus the sandwich was born. This version of the classic sandwich was loaded with tender, smoky corned beef, crunchy well-balanced sauerkraut, zingy thousand island dressing, and loads of melty gruyere on pumpernickel.
